Determination of organic iodine compounds in serum. II. Chromatographic studies of exogenous organic iodine compounds affecting the PBI and BEI.

چکیده
R1_ values of organic iodine compounds which interfere with the determination of serum protein-bound iodine (P81) and butanol-extractable iodine (BEI) levels were obtained for the solvent system 2-butanol-4% NH4OH (3:1) utilizing descending paper chromatography. The feasibility of employing this system for identification of exogenous organic iodine in patients’ sera was investigated. In general, the demonstration of these compounds or their metabolites was achieved only in sera obtained shortly after administration. This was due mainly to sensitivity limitations in the detection of the compounds on paper. Some data on the duration of interference with the PBI and BEI were also obtained for the radiopaque dyes Telepaque, Hypaque, Salipix, and Orabilex.

The most commonly-used test for determining the serum concentration of thyroid hormones is the protein-bound iodine analysis (PBI) which measures the serum's entire organic and some inorganic iodide concentration. Since it is desired to measure only that portion of the serum iodine which is in the thyroxine molecule, this test may be misleading. The method of PBI determination rou tinely used i...

In the diagnosis of masked hyperthyroidism, measurement of the serum precipitable iodine (SPI) (frequently also called protein-bound iodine [PBI]) has gained significance. Since 1951 determination of thyroxine-like or butanol-extractable iodine (BEI) has been the routine procedure in this laboratory.' This chemical tool is more specific than the PBI in the diagnosis of thyroid dysfunction. Not ...
متن کاملThe Determination of Iodine Species in Environmental and Biological Samples
Iodine is found in organic forms in plants and animals and in inorganic forms in natural water samples. Methods of identification and quantitative determination for iodine species are decided by the types of compound and the matrices in which they occur. Iodine is an essential element and specific radioimmunoassay methods have been devised for physiologically important compounds (thyroxine and ...

Unidentified substances in acetic acid column eluates, obtained in the determination of serum thyroxine by column chromatography with the anion-exchange resin Dowex-1, prevented the direct determination of thyroxine by interference with the iodidecatalyzed ceric-arsenite reaction. Pretreatment of the eluates with Br2 or Cl2 eliminated the interference and permitted the direct assay of thyroxine...
